ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Fortes Lopez is a Filipino-American writer who was born from immigrant parents. As a child growing up in the Philippines, he heard of the hardships his elders endured during the war. Their tales of torture and conflict opened his eyes to the harsh reality that nothing lasts forever. Driven to document their affliction, he aims to share his family’s past with future generations. Fortes began writing A Mother’s Will based on his experience growing up with his grandmother and her struggle to survive hardship living in poverty. Fortes honors the memory of loved ones by celebrating their life through his work. Their experiences have shaped him into who he is today.

Set in the Philippines during the 1970s, Mel is a street vendor who seeks deliverance from the confines of financial destitution. The constant battle to wrestle free from poverty’s grips exact a toll on this single mother. Mel gets advice from an unlikely ally who contends if she were desperate she marry an American. Mel must decide if she was predisposed to forfeit virtue for a fabricated union. As a believer in the cross and covenant, was she prepared for falling out of favor with her savior and risk not being saved at all? Inspired by real people, A Mother’s Will is as real as any feeling falling forward. Was life measured by dying for something real or living for the promise of an idea?  Mel must decide how much she is willing to relinquish to turn a rainbow into reality.
